Pitti Uomo 108 Takeaways
Words & photography: Lee Osborne @sartorialee

After an unusually wet start to the summer edition, the heat soon cranked up to its usual mid-thirty levels to ensure even linen was too heavy to clothe Pitti attendees - a string vest and boxers would’ve sufficed. Our man on the ground Lee Osborne lists his takeaways from a show that dictates the tone for the remainder of the menswear season
Oversized tailoring
Thankfully it’s rare nowadays to spot a skinny-suited silhouette, the trend for oversized Miami-style louche showed no sign of abating - and it’s a trend I am all over, quite frankly.
‘Shorts’ suits
Tailored shorts which began to emerge at the last summer edition (Pitti 106) were in evidence once again - replacing their trousered cousins to combat the cauldron of heat while still remaining sartorially resplendent. And if you’re young enough to pull it off, it was a look often paired with knee-length wrinkled socks - Nora Batty would’ve approved.

And the bandana played on
While ties were few and far between, the Bandana style of neck decoration was as strong as ever, worn predominantly with t-shirts or tracing the contours of cuban-collared shirts. Many were even fastened by Baden Powell style woggles or cygnet rings.
50 shades of beige
Beige still reigned supreme to combat the incessant heat, whether it was in the form of wide-legged trousers accessorised with western belts, unbuttoned linen jackets or the breathable luxury of lightweight knits.

Brown in town
While there were odd pops of burgundy and sky blue, the colour we’re told not to wear in urban surrounds, brown, remained as strong as ever, often combined with cyan, orange or cream accents - whether it was jackets worn with roomy linen shirts or ribbed vests under airflow-inducing knitted cardigans.
Rebellious sophistication
Where a navy jacket was the canvas for bolder, more playful and unexpected sartorial details such as a vivid rep-stripe shantung tie or madras pattern were noted - or stylishly draped pleated slacks in lucid pops of yellow or orange.

Cyclist inspiration
Whether it was intentional or not given the theme of this summer’s show was ‘Pitti Bikes’, some brands drew inspiration from the urban cycling scene, crafting collections which combined both style and functionality.
